Each Mourning Doll is a representation and embodiment of grief and is handmade with love and care. I make Mourning Dolls to give you a way to hold your grief, and to honor mortality.
"Seth's love had been deep and wondrous and she could remember how she had longed for her darling so fiercely at times. In her grief she found that she had never really known what longing was".
Sethe's dress is made of a rich matte black fabric. I had a very small amount of this beautiful shining embellished fabric, which I used for the front of her bodice. I then hand cut individual pieces to use as floral appliqués on her skirt, the neckline on her back and for her little hat. She has puffed sleeves and an ankle length skirt. Her dangly earrings are from a necklace from the 1920's
Her hair is hand dyed sheep wool and so so soft. She is 24" tall. She has the quote 'I long for you beyond any knowledge I had of longing' hand written on her torso. She comes with a small black bordered card with her name and quote handwritten by me.
Sethe was made in my home studio. I use cotton muslin for her body and used a traditional dye. her legs are black linen. Sethe's body is made with a combination of machine and hand stitching. I then hand stuffed and assembled her using a needle and thread.
