Bertha Antoinetta Mason is introduced to us as the violent wife who was put away in the attic in the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. The wonderful novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys gives us a fuller and far more sympathetic picture of Bertha before her descent into madness.
Bertha wears an white linen slip under an antique linen night dress, stained and crumpled. Her hair is loose and unkempt with a braid to hold it back. She is 24" tall.
Bertha was made in my smoke free home studio. I use cotton muslin for her body and her knees and elbows bend. Bertha's body is made with a combination of machine and hand stitching. I hand stuff and hand assembled her using a needle and thread. Her hair is wool.
