Faeries fascinate us for their ability to be seen as benign, innocent and kind, but also as dangerous, ruthless, and wild. I've combined these attributes in the creation of this series of Fae dolls.
Meet Snowdrop
Deep in winter, cold and white,
she offers consolation
and promises the warmth and light
of springs reconciliation;
Her neck does bend, so delicate,
her fragrance, faint and fair;
Put a snowdrop to your lips,
and suffer in despair
Snowdrops are the earliest blooming flower, emerging from frozen soil as early as January. I chose pale blue to represent the cold of winter and, of course, the white of the snowdrop.
Snowdrop's dress is made from a pale blue fabric that is delicate, light and airy. Her strapless bodice is fitted and embellished with white, delicately sequined floral appliqués. Her full skirt has an overlay of white tulle, and the front hem has the same white sequined floral appliqué hand sewn on it. Her large wings feature white muslin fronts with the pale blue fabric, then a layer of the floral tulle atop that. They are trimmed in machine embroidered scalloped edges. Her small wings are muslin with the blue fabric and white tulle. There is a large white flower at the center back of her wings. Her hair is white, with a braid across her crown and a bun in the back, wrapped in a long piece of the blue fabric from her dress. Her head bends slightly forward, in the posture of the snowdrop flower.
Snowdrop was made in my home studio. I use hand dyed cotton muslin for her body, which was made with a combination of machine and hand stitching. I then hand stuffed and assembled her using a needle and thread.
